Year 7 Dance

Yipeeee!

Term 4 is here. We thought we were busy before and now we pick up the pace. Our year 7 students, as part of our graduation process, learn and perform a dance. Sue Howard is our specialist dance teacher who always creates an exciting dance. The dance is performed at the last assembly of the year. Indeed we are the opening act. There will be two dances. As in previous years there will be a boys and a girls dance. Sue creates dances that challenge and stretch students thinking. They are complex and full of energy. This year practises will be on Wednesday in lessons 3 and 4.

The first is in Week 5: 16th November

Week 6: 23rd November

Week 7 :30th November

Week 8: 7th December

Week 9 14th December

The  final performance that you will not want to miss is on Friday 16th December, the last day of school.

If you can ensure that your child is at school on these days I would appreciate it. Some things are unavoidable I know but if any appointments could be made at another time, that would be helpful.

🎉Fringe Festival🎉

Late term 1, Mr Z and Ms Whelan decided that their students were going to organise and perform a fringe festival event for some younger students to enjoy. As soon as Mr Z and Ms Whelan announced that we were doing a performance, everyone started to talk and the room filled with joy and excitement. We had to get into groups and choose what kind of performance we wanted to do. There was many things to do, like dancing, singing, trick shots, mine craft and comedy. We had to do heaps of practice and planning we had to decide on the name, tickets, posters, props and what to do for the workshop after the performance.

On the ticket selling day everyone was madly shouting “Come to our performance!” It was pretty disappointing because my group only had 7 people in the first session and 0 in the second session. But Ms Whelan got some classes to come to our dance.

On the 10th of June the day had finally come. Everyone was so excited and nervous at the same time, we all got dressed into our costumes and then went to our venue to set up the room. At 11:55 it was our groups turn to perform, Tahli and Danica were standing at the door with hole punches to hole punch the students’ tickets. After our performance we all did a workshop with half our audience the other half went to the other group that was performing with us. In our second session we had a extra class which we were not expecting but it was fine.

My group was called the Masked Dancers, the people in my group were Danica, Tahli, Talitha, Bella and me, Chloe. We did our performance and workshop in the hall at 11:55-12:45 and then in the gym at 2:15-3:05. We were meant to finish ten minutes early but when you do mask making you have to be prepared to clean up after a lot. We did a dance to the song “Radha on the Dance Floor”, we had masks decorated with beautiful Indian patterns to wear while we did the dance. Our workshop was a mask making activity where we gave each student a mask to decorate. Once they were finished they came to one of us and we fitted string onto their masks so they were ready to wear. They then got to keep these amazing masks. They decorated them with things such as popsticks, gems/beads- which was not a good idea-, textas and pencils. I had such a great day.
EVERYONE DID AN AMAZING JOB!

🎪Fringe Event- The Masked Dancers🎭

The Masked DancersOn the 10th of June 2016 students from rooms 28 and 29 finally got to perform their well-practised items to some eager year 1 to 5 children from other classes in Woodend Primary School. This event managed to adopt the nickname “Woodend Primart School’s Fringe Festival”. Was this day a success? To find out if it really was we have to go back to the beginning…

Ms Whelan and Mr Z came up with the idea of this event to get an idea of how well their students could work in a group, resolve conflict, come up with creative ideas, plan, organise and perform. Myself and my classmates accepted this idea with much enthusiasm.

One of the hardest things to do for my group was coming up with our interesting and creative perfomance idea. We were very, very behind. All our ideas were being rejected by the teachers or someone in our group. Our team was falling apart. So many new arguments were breaking out and we thought tht we would never finish. Finally, on the final idea-creating day we were forced to come up with SOMETHING. Somehow we decided that we wanted mask-making to be the workshop and to connect this with our performance we would simply wear masks while we performed our… Our what? Sure lots of groups were doing dances but it seemed to be our only option. Tahli and I knew that we would have to work hard to keep up with the rest of the group.

We found out the hard way that a dance wasn’t the easy way out. We worked hard (and argued) every practise. Mr Z, Ms Whelan and Ms Fisher did help us along our rocky path to success. My team seemed to be behind everyone and couldn’t catch up. Until the dress rehearsals.

The night before the dress rehearsals my group was up until late organising clothes, jewelery, bracelets, music, music players, devices, speeches, arts and crafts, workshop masks and practising our dance. At least our masks were done. My team and I found it harder to perform in front of our classmates than we did on the actual day. Although, in the end the dress rehearsals benefitted us immensely. We weren’t behind anymore. We were going to be ok.

Ticket selling was a nightmare. We only got 7 willing audience membersand most of them were siblings or friends of siblings of people in my group. But Ms Whelan and Mr Z had a plan. They got us 4 classes to perfom for.

The time had come. Performance day was here. But I didn’t have time to stress because Chloe and I had been assigned the job of photographers. I was darting around taking hundreds of photos and short videos of everything I could. Did we end up succeeding? Yes, we did! Sure there were a few stumbles during the dance and using tiny sequins in our workshop was a bad idea but overall our first session was a success. We learnt from the little mistakes in our first session and our second was almost perfect. Although an extra class turned up and Tahli and I couldn’t hole punch their tickets. I learnt a lot about myself and my friends from this performance and was very happy with the end result.

Was this day a success? Yes. I believe it was.

Woodend Fringe Festival

We had a wonderful day today. Our Fringe Festival was a hit! Scary, but a hit! Students nervously organised themselves, did last minute preparations, dressed up, displayed posters and were ready to welcome their audiences. Our frequently practised performances and workshops were well received. Our students revelled in their skills and delighted in their worships. Don and I are very proud of them. More photos to follow.
